Breaking Away
by Paul Kingston
If a victory over his arch-rival at the world championships wasn't enough to prove his dominance, LaShawn Merritt settled the issue definitively this past Friday.
Running at the Weltklasse Zurich meet, LaShawn defeated Jeremy Wariner again in the 400m, crossing the finish line in a first-place time of 44.21 to Wariner's 44.62.
As reported by the Associated Press:
Wariner stayed with Merritt until the last 50 meters but could not keep up with the man who has taken away his Olympic and world titles.
ENGLISH VICTORY
Competing in the British Grand Prix on Monday, LaShawn added another 400m title to his undefeated season. BBC Sport reported the race via live text on its web site:
1423: It's the 400m. Rooney false-starts. Merritt looks as though he's strolling. He then cranks it up - Bingham's left standing. LaShawn Merritt strolls through in 45.11. Rooney in second - pretty good run for the Brit there. Rooney - donning his orange shades - is all smiles. Huge applause for the American.
LaShawn Merritt after winning the 400m: "I'm feeling great. I won the Olympics and now I'm world champion and I've come here. I'm feeling good."
