More Speedwork for LaShawn
by Matt Martino
The last minute participation of the Olympic 400m champion LaShawn Merritt in the 200m was a pleasant surprise for the organizers of the 25th European Athletics Outdoor Premium Meeting, Vardinoyiannia.
LaShawn utilized Monday’s event in Rethymno, Greece, as an opportunity to improve his short game. He finished third with a time of 20.29 in what was the closest competition of the meet. Caught from behind at the finish line, Rae Edwards (20.01) finished second to Steven Mullings (20.00).
Monday marked the third time this season that LaShawn shortened his event and decided to run the 200. He competed in the 200 at Athletissima 2009 in Lausanne, Switzerland, finishing second to Usain Bolt with a time of 20.41 despite miserable conditions that included headwind and pouring rain.
His best finish, 20.07, came at the 2009 Adidas Track Classic in Carson, California.
